Digital Billboard Design Tips for 2022

Updated: Oct 19, 2022

Digital billboards continue to be an essential marketing tool for organizations looking to build brand awareness. While there are no hard and fast rules for designing a digital billboard, there are a few guidelines that will make your signage reaches its target audience.

Simplicity is key.

Your sign is useless if pedestrians and drivers cannot read it. Here are GreenSigns top tips for outdoor signage:

Use large, easy-to-read fonts. Avoid decorative, serif, and script fonts. Outdoor signage should be legible from at least 500 feet away. When designing digital outdoor, it may help to put a stroke or glow around text to make certain it can be read over the top of a background.

Use simple, straightforward messaging. Your audience has a limited amount of time to interact with your digital sign. Don’t confuse them with too many ideas on the screen.

Be short and sweet. Limit the number of words and pictures you feature in your sign. No more than ten words is a good rule of thumb.

Use bold colors. And make sure they’re contrasting! Complementary colors are not easily visible.

Take a look at the images below, which one is more legible?

Any combination of similar color values will produce low visibility. Color combinations like yellow and black or blue and white are dissimilar in both hue and value providing the strongest contrast for out-of-home design.

The best outdoor advertising utilizes all of the components we mentioned above. That doesn’t mean your digital signage has to be boring! Follow us on Instagram for more digital design billboard tips and inspiration.
